AS/NZS 3260

AS/NZS is applicable both in Australia and New Zealand.

The following is a list of the major differences between this standard and IEC 60950:

  • Component Requirements (Annex P). In addition to the IEC standard requirements for components, approvals in accordance with the relevant Australian or New Zealand standards are acceptable.
  • There are limits on the value of direct current in the equipment neutral (Appendix 3).
  • For sizes of  cables and conduits in Australia,  refer to AS 3000. (3.2.2; Appendix A)
  • Substitute for Table 11: For sizes of conductors in power supply cords use the following Table 11: (3.2.4; Appendix A)

TABLE 11
SIZES OF CONDUCTORS IN POWER SUPPLY CORDS

Rated current of Appliance       Nominal cross-section area [mm˛]

Over 0.2 up to and including 3                 0.5*
Over 3 up to and including 7.5                 0.75
Over 7.5 up to and including 10               1
Over 10 up to and including 16                1.5
Over 16 up to and including 25                2.5
Over 25 up to and including 32                4
Over 32 up to and including 40                6
Over 40 up to and including 63               10

*This nominal cross-sectional area is only allowed for Class II appliances if the length of the power supply cord, measured between the point where the cord or  cord guard, enters the appliance, and the entry to the plug, does not exceed 2 m (0.5 mm˛ three-core supply flexible cords are not permitted; see Note 2 to Table 2.17 of  AS/NZS 3191).

  • Overvoltage tests for telecoms equipment. Both the electric strength test and the impulse tests must be carried out. The test voltages used for both the electric strength test and the impulse test are higher than for those given in IEC 60950 (Appendix A).

Note: This list is not complete.  Please refer to the standard itself for full information.
