(previously known as leakage current)

Note that references are to IEC 60950 Third Edition 1999-04. Where the references in the Second Edition differ, they appear in parentheses.

REQUIREMENT

The earth leakage current shall not exceed the following limits:

Class II equipment          :                 0.25 mA

Handheld Class I equipment:           0.25 mA

All other Class I equipment:              3.5 mA

Under certain conditions, three-phase equipment may have higher earth leakage currents - clause 5.1.7 (5.2.5)

Note that earth leakage current test is one of the most important safety tests. In the event of a Class I product becoming disconnected from earth, this current will flow through a user who touches the product.!

TEST METHOD

The standard defines exactly how earth leakage current is measured, but for Class I equipment, earth leakage current is simply the current which flows in the earth supply conductor during normal operation of the equipment.

For Class II equipment, leakage is measured to earth from accessible conductive parts or from a 'hand-sized' piece of metal foil in contact with nonconductive parts of the enclosure.

REFERENCE

Complete requirements are given in IEC 60950, Clause 5.1 (5.2).
