Components in circuits at
Hazardous Voltage are considered safety critical. REQUIREMENTS
Safety critical components must comply with the relevant
safety standard for that component. For European approvals the relevant standard is EN 60309 or EN 60320.
DESIGN TIPS
- Many versions of appliance inlets are available, some including fuse or fuses, mains switch and EMI/RFI filters. Models are available with
basic or double insulation between the mains terminals and the chassis.
Connections to the terminals of appliance inlets are usually implemented by means of mechanical securement and soldering. For the US market, if termination is made by crimped-type quick
disconnect connection for the earthing tab, then the tab of the inlet should accommodate 6.3 mm wide quick disconnect connectors.
For appliance inlets where the earthing terminal is directly terminated to the earthing trace on a PCB, specialized testing is required for the North American market.
Unless an appliance inlet is custom designed, the only practical option is to use an appliance inlet which already has the relevant safety approvals. Make sure
the appliance inlet has the approvals you need for your target markets (see Submitting a product to a
Test House for Approval).
If you plan to submit your product to a Test House, you will probably be required to submit a copy of the safety approval license of the appliance inlet together
with your product. The Test House needs the certificate to authenticate the approval and to ensure that you use the appliance inlet in accordance with any Conditions of Acceptability which may be
specified as part of the approval. The supplier of your appliance should be able to get you a copy of the license.
MANUFACTURERSYou can get information on appliance inlets from the
