Some batteries are considered safety critical due to the fact that they are liable to explode if charged with the wrong polarity. The product design must ensure that this is not possible, even under fault conditions.

REQUIREMENTS

The battery circuit must be designed in such a way the reverse charging of a battery cannot occur, even under fault conditions.

For batteries in an operator accessible area, a warning should be placed adjacent to the battery, warning the operator that there is a danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced. The text of the warning should be similar to:

CAUTION

Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced.
Replace only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions.

DESIGN TIPS

Designers may use chips or other circuitry which provide protection against reverse charging of batteries under single fault conditions.

MANUFACTURERS

You can get information on components which provide protection against reverse charging of batteries from the following list of  manufacturer.

Dallas Semiconductor

The list of manufacturers is given as a service for your convenience. It does not imply i-Spec's recommendation of any particular manufacturer or component. Manufacturers wishing to be added to this list are requested to contact us.

REFERENCE

Complete requirements are given in IEC 60950, Clauses 1.7.15 and 4.3.8 (1.7.17).
