Safety critical components must comply with the relevant
safety standard for that component. Mains capacitors connected between two phases, or between a phase and neutral must comply with the X capacitor requirements of EN 60384-14:1993, subclass X1 or X2.
Capacitors connected between the primary circuit and protective earth must comply with EN 60384-14:1993, subclass Y1, Y2 or Y4, as applicable.
A single capacitor bridging double or reinforced insulation
must comply with the Y capacitor requirements of EN 60384-14, subclass Y1.
For two capacitors in series, bridging double or reinforced insulation, each capacitor must comply with the Y capacitor
requirements of EN 60384-14, subclass Y2 or Y4.
DESIGN TIPS
The only practical option is to use a safety-critical capacitor which already has the relevant safety approvals. Make sure the capacitor has the approvals you need for your target markets (see
