REQUIREMENTS

Safety critical components must comply with the relevant safety standard for that component.

i-Spec presents specific information on power supplies, transformers, mains switches, appliance inlets, fuses, capacitors, power supply connection and cords , wiring , PCB's, optocouplers, lasers and LED's, lithium batteries, motors and fans.

Appendix P of IEC 60950 references acceptable standards for use in component approvals. The following table lists some of these standards. Note that national variants may require the use of national standards, rather than IEC standards for component approvals.

DESIGN TIPS

Unless a safety-critical component is custom designed, it is advantageous to use a component which already has the relevant safety approvals. Make sure the component has the approvals you need for your target markets (see Submitting a product to a Test House for Approval) .

If you plan to submit your product to a Test House, you will probably be required to submit a copy of the safety approval license of the component together with your product. The Test House needs the certificate to authenticate the approval and to ensure that you use the component in accordance with any Conditions of Acceptability which may be specified as part of the approval. The supplier of the component should be able to get you a copy of the license.
