Note that references are to IEC 60950 Third Edition 1999-04. Where the references in the Second Edition differ, they appear in parentheses.

IEC 60950 classifies enclosures as electrical enclosures , fire enclosures and mechanical enclosures, depending on the safety functions provided by the enclosure. In many cases a product's enclosure will function as all three types of enclosure. External parts of enclosures that have no safety function are considered decorative parts.

Clause 4.7.2.1 (4.4.5) of IEC 60950 specifies those conditions for which a fire enclosure is required.

The requirements for stability, mechanical strength, and the size and form of openings are common to all types of enclosures.

Protection from mechanical hazards cover the requirements of mechanical enclosures, while the choice of materials is of particular importance for fire enclosures.

A subject requiring special attention is the use of conductive coatings for improving the EMC performance of the equipment.
