REQUIREMENTS

Wherever practical, indicators and controls should be identified using internationally recognized symbols, so that their function can be understood without the use of a specific language. An example is the use of O and | as markings on primary power switches.

When the function of an indicator or control is related to safety, any color used must comply with the requirements of IEC 73. The use of red represents a hazard. Yellow represents a caution or warning.

Where safety is not involved, any color may be used.

Markings relating to a control must be located either adjacent to the control, or so that it is obvious to which control the marking applies.

Complete requirements are given in IEC 60950, Clause 1.7.8
