REQUIREMENTS

Lasers are required to comply with IEC 60825-1.

The markings and documentation specified in IEC 60825-1 and/or CFR 1040 are also required.

In accordance with Amendment A11 of EN 60950 (European Union), some LED's, within the scope of EN 60825-1, must be demonstrated to comply with EN 60825-1. This does not apply to the USA, as LED's are not covered by CFR 1040.

DESIGN TIPS

Make sure the laser or LED has the approvals you need for your target markets (see Submitting a product to a Test House for Approval). For North America you should get a laser test report to CFR 1040, while for Europe the test report should be to EN 60825-1.

If you plan to submit your product to a Test House, you will probably be required to submit a copy of the applicable laser test report  together with your product. The supplier of the laser should be able to get you a copy of the report.

REFERENCE

Complete requirements are given in IEC 60950, Clause 4.3.13.
