REQUIREMENTSNote: Many National Variants of IEC 60590 have additional markings requirments. Check i-Spec's pages on National Variants.
If a product is intended to be connected to the supply mains, it must be marked with its
rated voltage, rated frequency and rated current.A range of values is signified by a hyphen, e.g. 220-240 V
means that the unit is rated to operate from any voltage between 220 V and 240 V. Multiple ratings are signified by the use of a 'slash', e.g.
115/230 V means that the unit is rate to operate at either 115V or 230 V, probably with some means of switching between the voltages. Unless the method of switching rated voltages or
frequencies is obvious, the following instruction must appear near the rating marking: SEE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE CONNECTING TO THE SUPPLY
Products must also be marked with the manufacturer's name and model or type reference.
Class II products must be marked with the symbol shown to the right. (IEC 417 No. 5172) .
A wiring terminal used for
connection to the protective earthing of the supply wiring must be marked as shown (IEC 417 No. 5019)
For products with operator replaceable batteries, where replacement with a battery of an incorrect type may cause an explosion, a marking of the following type should be
placed adjacent to the battery compartment: CAUTION
Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent type
recommended by the manufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions.
For products which include lasers or LED's, the markings specified in IEC 60825-1 and/or CFR 1040 are also required.
All markings must be durable and legible. This is checked by the markings durability test. DESIGN TIPS
Wherever practical, markings should use internationally recognized symbols, so that their function can be understood without the use of a specific language. An example is the use of O and | as markings on primary power switches. A source of such symbols is the standard IEC 417. Note that using the words 'ON/OFF' for the
mains switch would mean that the product does not comply with the standard in non-English speaking countries. If your product has a standby mode (i.e. part of the product remains active), the standby symbol (IEC 417, No. 5009)
should be used for the 'off' position
