Components in circuits at Hazardous Voltage are considered safety critical. Components with motors are also considered safety critical , as a locked motor is a potential fire hazard.

REQUIREMENTS

Safety critical components must comply with the relevant safety standard for that component.

DESIGN TIPS

The preferred option is to use a motor which already has the relevant safety approvals. Make sure the motor has the approvals you need for your target markets (see Submitting a product to a Test House for Approval).

If you plan to submit your product to a Test House, you will probably be required to submit a copy of the safety approval license of the motor together with your product. The Test House needs the certificate to authenticate the approval and to ensure that you use the motor in accordance with any Conditions of Acceptability which may be specified as part of the approval. The supplier of your motor should be able to get you a copy of the license.

Motors which are not approved may be tested under overload and/or locked rotor conditions, within the framework of your product's investigation. This is liable to increase the cost of testing.

The tests required depend on the type of motor. Details are given in Annex B of EN 60950.

REFERENCE

Complete requirements are given in IEC 60950, Clauses 5.3.2 and Annex B (5.4.2 and Annex B).
